Day 11: Onions!

It's the little things that are big things when you don't have access to many things. Right?

I was so pleased today to find onions at Tedeschi! I had run out of wheat bread and since I knew they had the best selection of bread of any of the stores I've visited so far, I went there for a resupply, and lo and behold - they had a red onion and a 2 lb bag of yellow onions! Can I tell you, that made my day? It did. It made my day. I cook with onions all the time - sometimes twice a day. I love onions. I especially love them caramelized. Which is what I did as soon as I got these bad boys home.

Caramelized onions are such a divine pleasure. For dinner I mixed them in with some of the Hunt's spaghetti sauce and served it over macaroni. What a treat! I was so happy.

(that's the text book I'm using for my Health Econ class in the background).

 So dinner was

Dinner  Quantity   Cost   Calories
macaroni   3.00  $0.47    310
sauce   1.00  $0.34      60
onion   5.00  $0.39      32
olive oil  1/3  $0.12      40

 $1.31    442

Of course dinner was the end of the day, as it usually is.

Breakfast was corn bread muffin and cottage cheese, which I was pleased to have found at the Circle K, as I mentioned yesterday. These things keep popping up here and there. Finding good food in the Desert is a bit like playing Whack-a-mole. One store has one thing, another store has something else. I suppose that's why grocery stores are "supermarkets".

Breakfast  Quantity   Cost   Calories
corn bread    1.00  $0.16   170
egg (in corn bread) 1/6  $0.05     13
milk (in corn bread) 0     $0.02       5
cottage cheese    1.00  $1.75   220
coffee    3.00  $0.28       4

 $2.25   412

It's nice to have cottage cheese, but as with anything that is too close to "prepared", it's pricey.

Lunch was my standby - the PB & Banana sandwich! With a side of raisins.

Lunch  Quantity   Cost   Calories
bread, wheat    2.00  $0.20   160
peanut butter    1.00  $0.42   180
banana    1.00  $0.19     90
raisins    0.70  $0.30     90

 $1.11   520

I had a couple more cups of coffee ($0.28; 4 calories) through the course of the day, a bag of peanuts ($0.50; 260 calories) before my afternoon class, and a serving of raisins ($0.43; 120) while I was making dinner. And that was pretty much the day.

Day totals:

Cost: $5.45
Calories: 1,758
Exercise: 680 calories from 18,022 steps.
Net calories: 1,078
weight: 170.2
