Day 7: this is how we roll in the Desert

It is a challenge to find a convenience store that stocks fresh fruit or vegetables, especially when the stores know there are large, full service grocery stores only minutes away.

It was pleasing to have a chance to cut into a pepper this morning to make my omelet.

I fried up a couple of ounces of kielbasa with the chopped pepper, then poured the scrambled eggs over it once the peppers were softening up on the edges. I wish I could have had some onion, though. It's odd - if a convenience store was going to carry vegetables of any sort, I would think they would carry some of the root vegetables like onions and potatoes. I have found some carrots, but mostly in the form of snack bags. For fruit, bananas are pretty popular. Some apples and pears in a few places.

Breakfast  Quantity   Cost   Calories
eggs 2.00  $0.59 150
kielbasa 2.00  $0.62 180
pepper, green 0.25  $0.25     7
cheese, cheddar 0.50  $0.20    55

 $1.66  392

I made pasta primavera, ala convenience store for lunch. A nice mix of carrots, peppers, mushrooms, peas, green beans, some spices, and olive oil. Pretty good eating, considering. You work with the material you have. Of course I'd have preferred all fresh ingredients, but it didn't taste bad.

 $2.54 470

I broke into the bag of almonds I'd been sitting on this afternoon and had 1 ounce as a snack ($0.66, 180 calories).

Coffee I kind of drank throughout the day. I think it was about 6 tbsps worth for $0.56.

Dinner was pretty simple - tuna melt on wheat, with some carrots and celery (with ranch dressing).

Dinner  Quantity   Cost   Calories
bread, wheat    2.00  $0.40    160
mayonaise    0.75  $0.06      75
tuna    1.00  $1.00      63
cheese, cheddar    1.00  $0.40     110

celery    1.50  $0.58        8
dressing, ranch    0.50  $0.24      70

 $1.85    526

What is funny is I'm starting to learn the variations between the convenience stores. I hit Tedeschi today because I remembered they had olive oil. But on the way home I realized I wanted peas, so I stopped at Dover Discount Beverage to pick those up. Tedeschi doesn't have bananas, but Circle K does. It's a goofy thing to have to think like that, when you're used to just going to the grocery store and being able to pick up everything you need.

Day Totals:

Cost:  $7.27
Calories: 1,568
Weight: 172.8

I only hit 3,800 steps because I didn't get on the treadmill and I spent much of the day working at my computer, so no calorie adjustment.
